About Us
The Southwest Georgia Project is a legacy organization that was founded in the 1960s by Civil Rights leaders, Charles and Shirley Sherrod. The organization seeks to create meaningful and just solutions that advance equity in the food and agriculture systems. We are a grassroots organization that provides technical assistance and training to underserved farmers and communities in Southwest Georgia. |
Mission
Our work enables rural communities to thrive, we develop community food systems and support human rights through community organizing, outreach, farmer and consumer education, technical assistance, and partnerships. |
Vision
The Southwest Georgia Project and it's sister organizations (New Communities, Inc. and Charles Sherrod CDC) envisions a self-sufficient and vibrant Southwest Georgia anchored in justice and equity supported by sustainable land-based economic and social development. |
From our Founder
Over the years, we have faced challenges that tested our resilience, but we have also witnessed remarkable achievements. Through our collaborative efforts, we have empowered local leaders and historically underserved farmers, supported sustainable agriculture, and advocated for social justice. Looking ahead, we remain focused on our mission to uplift the voices of marginalized communities and create equitable opportunities for all. Thank you for your unwavering support; together, we can build a brighter future for our communities. Shirley M. Sherrod |
